Academy's Deputy Director wins Canadian Grant

Dr Eve Hepburn, Deputy Director of the Academy, has won a Canadian Grant to explore demands for Scottish and Quebec independence.

Eve HepburnThe award is a research grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Dr Hepburn's co-investigators will include Dr Ailsa Henderson (University of Edinburgh), Dr Eric Belanger (McGill University), and Dr Richard Nadeau (Universite de Montreal).

This Scottish-Quebec team will explore 'Les parties et les electeurs au Quebec et en Ecosse: Une etude compare' (Parties and Voters in Quebec and Scotland: A Comparative Study).

Specifically, the team will explore the impact of the ‘national question’ on the strategies of political parties and the preferences of the electorate. Alongside conducting interviews with party officials, the research team will conduct a large-scale public opinion survey on the constitutional preferences of voters in each of the two countries – Scotland and Quebec – in the lead-up to the Scottish National Party’s controversial proposed referendum on independence in 2014-15. The team were funded CAD $92,062 for this project, which lasts from 2011-15.
