Academy's Director at the Scottish Parliament's Finance Committee
Professor Charlie Jeffery offered evidence to the Finance Committee on demographic change and its effect on fiscal sustainability.
On Wednesday 11 January 2012 our Director, Professor Charlie Jeffery, gave evidence at the Scottish Parliament's Finance Committee. Warning that the current 'fiscal tightness' could return us to a situation in which older people were categorised as a 'fiscal calamity', Professor Jeffery went on to discuss the findings of a report he authored for Age Scotland.
Professor Jeffery told MSPs that the move over recent years to recognise older people as 'active citizens making a contribution to society' was to be welcomed and must be sustained. Professor Jeffery also commented on demographic changes more broadly and the issue of migration into Scotland.
Professor Jeffery appeared alongside James McCormick from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation; Professor of Economics at the University of Strathclyde, Robert E Wright; Professor of Epidemiology of Ageing at Newcastle University Carol Jagger; and Professor David Bell from Stirling University.
The committee hearing can be viewed here and Professor Jeffery's report for Age Scotland is available here (see pp. 9-56).
